Maria and JT do not hide behind powerpoints or prerecorded video lectures. If you ask a question they’re gonna hand draw you an illustration and animatedly explain the answer. Or hand you the tactile learning tool or model you need to master that skill with your own learning style. I experienced a calm, trickling in and sometimes reorganization of a complex medical system or problem. The process was fascinating, as a deeply rooted knowledge base developed that connected my heart and my values and challenged my intellect and critical thinking skills and aligned it all with the cells of my body. I don’t know how they worked this magic. I felt energized every night after class.
They are humble and clever and funny. We literally never had a boring or tedious class session. Any new equipment, extraction scenario, new medication or law was not outside of their immediate ability implement into our learning process. As professionals who have been active consistently in the field and continue to be active in community paramedicine and clinical practice, they have zero competition on the Wasatch front–or back, or maybe anywhere 😂. Why anyone would go to any other EMT program is beyond me. With the needs of Utah’s growing urban population and the demand for high quality medical training, I’d say they arrived on scene right on time.

Fiercely relevant training!
Maria was an excellent instructor and demonstrated tremendous knowledge in her field. Having completed first aid training annually for the last 20 years, I can state the her training was by far the most interesting and enjoyable. Maria explained medical details that provided a more solid and comprehensive training because she explained “the why” behind various aspects of CPR other instructors don’t explain.

I completed EMT training back in 2017. Maria is an excellent instructor who always came with good energy, passion and knowledge. The EMT program was structured very well and Maria made the material easy to understand. I did my EMT training back in 2018 with Maria as my instructor. I had zero medical experience and hadn’t been to any type of school in over a decade. Maria is very dedicated, approachable and made me feel comfortable in class. She knows her EMT material inside and out; and is an even better EMT instructor. I was always excited to go to EMT class, as Maria knows a variety of teaching methods to compliment diverse learning styles. She would go above and beyond by making herself available outside of class time to tutor anyone that wanted help. Through her engaging lectures and EMT skill sessions, I was able to pass the NREMT on my first try and land an EMT position with an ambulance company. Maria is very professional, compassionate and breeds successful EMTs through her EMT program.

We contracted with Guardian EMT to provide our CPR/AED/First aid training to our staff at our assisted living community and they were exceptional! JT and Maria were professional, organized and very engaging. The classes are very informative and thorough. JT’s experience in the medical field created an exceptional learning environment. The staff is very educated and involved and truly care that the students succeed.
It is difficult to find times for scheduling these courses for our staff since we have 24-hour staffing. They were flexible and worked around our staffing schedule to provide classes for all our staff. I would highly recommend Guardian EMT for your course needs.

Maria is such an amazing educator and human being that it’s really hard to sum it up into a review – she was my EMT Instructor, & worked tirelessly throughout the EMT program to make sure that she was teaching things in a way that everyone – with any learning style, could understand. She would constantly volunteer her time outside of the EMT class to hold study sessions both online & in-person, & really went above & beyond teaching the EMT skills training & curriculum. I would not have been able to pass the EMT program without her support & integrative/progressive teaching style. I had good refreshing knowledge and gaining more experience going through scenarios as being instructed. JT and Marie are great instructors. I would seek their knowledge again. Also its good knowledge to know if any parent has children. It would be better to know what to do for a loved one or anyone in the heat of the moment instead of waiting for someone else that knows.

Maria Barcena is by far the best EMT instructor I’ve ever known. She is passionate about teaching and truly understands the different learning styles of students. I say this from the perspective of being a former student of hers, then working alongside her as an EMT instructor. Because of Maria’s instruction, I was able to pass the NREMT (EMT National Registry) on my first attempt. I’m now working my dream job as a firefighter. Back when I first started as an EMT when I was 19 Maria Barcena was my first trainer and introduction into being an EMT. Being young an lacking life experience and real job experience when I first trained with Maria I struggled and had a hard time being an EMT. What separates Maria from all the other teachers is that even though I struggled I can still remember how kind and how truly compassionate she was about helping me succeed and trying different ways to teach me and help me understand what I was trying to learn. She created a safe and fun environment to learn in, but at the same time she was honest and set goals that were realistic and obtainable to make me a better provider. She also made it important to try to understand your patients and to be able to acclimate to their culture, creed or beliefs. When I think of who in my life has helped me try to be a proficient provider and overall a good person I think of my roots of a being an EMT and that is my trainer Maria Barcena.

Maria was my EMT instructor. Currently working as a paramedic. Maria’s encyclopaedic knowledge of physiology & pathophys, matched with an exceptional talent in finding a teaching modality that meets each of her students where they are, and helping them find the avenue to their own understanding, is in my view the touchstone of her pedagogic brilliance. She is an admirable for her patience, her willingness to go beyond the confines of the classroom or the textbook to help students reach their goal, including tutoring, mentoring study groups, and supporting students with compassion through the challenges of the EMT curriculum and beyond. In an industry where there is a notable and small upper echelon of EMS educators, I consider Maria to be in rare company right at the top. J.T. and Maria with Guardian came out to teach my security team members. They offered the best quality first-aid training I have ever experienced. (I am an Army combat arms veteran and have taken many courses over the years.) We covered Assessments, CPR, AED and use. They covered the treatment of adults, children, babies etc. They had the latest train tools and materials and have brought many years of actual emergency response experience to the table. Their knowledge and ability to train trauma treatment is absolutely unparalleled. I recommend them to any organization. They are also very reasonably priced, and a great value!

The main instructor Maria Barcena is absolutely incredible! Her teaching style is unparalleled! She was my EMT lead instructor for my 6 month program. She went above and beyond what was necessary to help me in the classroom and in applying the many skills learned in the course. I was Maria emt student and I am grateful I had her as an EMT instructor. She had patience and used multiple ways to help me grasp the material. As a former educator making a career change to become a firefighter and going back to school was a challenge but she made things easier by catering to my learning style. There are great EMTs but only few can be great teachers. JT and Maria taught many things that I hadn’t learned before, despite having prior CPR and AED certification. They explained the mechanics, science, and biology behind CPR and AED’s; how to apply them properly for people of all ages and genders; and why it is so important to administer them correctly. When we talked about First Aid, we did hands-on practice with equally thorough explanations.
